HOW MANY VOTES DOES SARA DUTERTE NEED TO BE CONVICTED?

MANILA — Vice President Sara Duterte needs at least 16 votes from the 24-member Senate to be convicted in her impeachment trial.

Under the 1987 Constitution, an impeached official cannot be convicted without the concurrence of two-thirds of all members of the Senate. With all 24 senators sitting as senator-judges, that means 16 votes are required.

16 VOTES TO CONVICT

Kung 16 or more senators vote to convict, mahimong ma-remove si Duterte from office and face perpetual disqualification from holding public office, depending on the judgment imposed by the Senate. 

Kung 15 or fewer ang votes for conviction, dili maabot ang two-thirds threshold ug dili siya ma-convict sa impeachment trial.

Importante usab nga ang 16 votes dili lang “votes to impeach”—ang House of Representatives maoy nag-impeach kang Duterte ug nagpadala sa Articles of Impeachment ngadto sa Senate. Ang 16 votes mao ang threshold para sa conviction by the Senate impeachment court.

WHY THE NUMBER MATTERS
